Stress is universal and now more than ever people are looking for stress management techniques that work for them. The key to stress management is to be realistic and prepared. We can’t eliminate all our stress but we can practice different types of stress management so we can manage and reduce stress to build resilience.
False impressions about stress can sabotage our efforts to manage stress. Read the three myths below to avoid these stress management pitfalls.
Myth #1 You have to eliminate all your stress.
People think that the key to managing stress is to not have any; when in fact we need some stress in our lives. It’s nearly impossible to eliminate all stress. Trying to be stress-free would most likely create more stress. A realistic approach is to accept that stress is a part of life and can challenge us to grow, perform and succeed.
Myth #2 If you change your outlook you won’t have any stress.
While a shift in your attitude can make a big difference, stress can still take a toll on us. It is best to work towards a positive attitude, but a positive attitude alone won’t remove stress. Your goal should be to eliminate stressors you can change and develop strategies to manage the stressors you cannot eliminate from your life. Positive attitude coupled with stress management techniques help keep you smiling!
Myth #3 There is one perfect stress management technique for everyone.
It is best to have many techniques in your toolbox to handle different types of stressful situations. Using just one strategy may not reduce your stress enough. There are times when you won’t be able use your one method in the moment; especially if it is exercising or meditation. Develop additional techniques such as positive thinking or deep breathing exercises.
