Prescription drug monitoring programs (Letter to the Editor)

To the Editor: The Commentary by Drs Gugelmann and Perrone¹ highlights the important role of prescription monitoring programs in the struggle against opioid misuse in the United States. Although the authors emphasized the uncertain efficacy of these programs in reducing opioid-related morbidity and mortality, we believe there are additional applications for these programs and alternate ways to assess their overall effect.
